“So if photos or carousels are a better way for you to tell your story and you don’t really want to create videos, that’s awesome.”
That’s Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s Head, answering a July 2026 Q&A question about whether the Instagram carousel still has a place. His answer was unambiguous: carousels are valuable, and by his read they’re gaining momentum rather than losing it. Which leaves the harder question, the one the format debate keeps skipping.
There is no universal answer
“Should I post carousels or reels” is a badly formed question, because the right mix depends on things that vary wildly between accounts. An account selling handmade ceramics and an account selling B2B software have almost nothing in common in how their audiences want to be reached, and a single answer can’t serve both.
Instagram’s own behavior confirms there’s no house preference. The team has spent the last stretch making static formats more capable, not less, adding music to photo posts and per-slide captions to carousels. Nobody invests in a format they’re trying to retire, which is also why Instagram isn’t getting rid of photos despite the rumor resurfacing every few months.
The three variables that decide it
Does your content have steps, or does it have motion? Anything with a sequence, a comparison, a list, a before-and-after, or detail worth studying belongs in a carousel. Anything where the value is in movement, timing, sound or personality belongs in a reel.
Can you actually produce video at a sustainable quality? A mediocre reel published weekly loses to a strong carousel published weekly. Format advantage evaporates when execution drops.
What do you want the post to do? Reels are the better discovery engine and reach people who don’t follow you. Carousels are the better saving and reference engine and do more work on people who already do.
The if-then path
- If the idea has more than three discrete points, make it a carousel.
- If the idea depends on a face, a voice, or a demonstration in motion, make it a reel.
- If you want new people to find you this week, lead with a reel.
- If you want existing followers to keep and reuse the thing, lead with a carousel.
- If you can only produce one format well, produce that one and stop apologizing.
The format that fits your idea beats the format that’s supposedly favored.
Two worked examples
A skincare brand with a founder comfortable on camera should run reels as the primary discovery format, with carousels handling ingredient breakdowns and routine steps that people want to reference later. Roughly two reels to one carousel.
A B2B consultancy whose expert hates being filmed should invert that completely. Carousels carry the frameworks and the teardowns, reels appear occasionally as talking-head clips from webinars they were already recording. Roughly two carousels to one reel, and the account will still grow.
Both are correct. The mistake is running the skincare plan for the consultancy because someone said reels win. If you’re already juggling both, posting a carousel and a reel on the same day is its own question with its own answer.
Making the mix visible
The reason format strategy drifts is that nobody looks at the ratio until the quarter is over. Seeing next month’s posts laid out by format in a shared content calendar makes an unbalanced plan obvious while you can still fix it.
FAQ
Are Instagram carousels still valuable in 2026? Yes. Mosseri described carousels as definitely valuable and growing in momentum during the July 2026 Q&A.
Do carousels get less reach than reels? It depends. Reels typically reach further beyond your followers, while carousels tend to earn more saves and deeper engagement from people who already follow you.
Do I have to post reels to grow on Instagram? No. Instagram has deliberately invested in making photos and carousels more expressive so creators aren’t forced into video.
How many slides should an Instagram carousel have? As many as the idea needs, up to the limit. Slides that exist only to pad the count hurt swipe-through rates.
