Accounts Reached

Funny illustration glossary
The number of unique eyeballs who saw your post. Not a repeat count.

Accounts Reached is the total number of unique accounts that have seen your content at least once. It’s one of the most important reach metrics Instagram provides in Insights, and it answers a fundamental question: how many different people are actually seeing what you post? Unlike impressions, which count every time someone sees your content (including repeats), accounts reached counts each person only once, no matter how many times they view it.

Why is accounts reached different from impressions?

This distinction matters more than you’d think. Imagine your post gets 500 impressions. That sounds great—until you realize 300 of those came from just 50 people seeing it multiple times. Your actual reach? Only 150 unique accounts. That’s where the reach metric comes in. It tells you the true size of your audience, not the volume of views. High impressions with low reach means your existing followers are engaged but you’re not expanding to new people. Low impressions with solid reach? Your content is reaching new audiences efficiently.

How do you find your accounts reached on Instagram?

You’ll find this data in Instagram Insights, available only on Business and Creator accounts. For individual posts, Stories, or Reels, tap “View insights” below the content. The accounts reached number appears right at the top. You can also see your overall reach data in the Insights tab on your profile, which shows you reach trends over time. This helps you spot which content types and posting times perform best with new audiences.

Does accounts reached work the same across all content types?

Mostly, yes—but there are subtle differences. For Reels, accounts reached counts unique accounts that saw your video on screen at least once, whether or not they actually played it. For Stories, it’s the same logic: unique views count once per account. For carousel posts and standard photos, the metric works identically. The key point: Instagram measures reach consistently across formats, so you can compare performance fairly.

What’s a good accounts reached number?

That depends entirely on your follower count and content strategy. A smaller account reaching 50% of its followers with a single post is doing well. A larger account might reach 10–15% of followers organically because Instagram’s algorithm distributes content more widely across the platform. The real benchmark is growth over time: are your reach numbers trending up? Are you reaching more non-followers? Those trends matter more than any absolute number.

How can you increase your accounts reached?

Post consistently so Instagram’s algorithm learns your audience. Use relevant hashtags and keywords to appear in searches. Create content that people want to share—Reels, in particular, get distributed to far more accounts than static posts. Engage with your community so your followers see your posts earlier, giving the algorithm early signals that your content is worth showing to more people. Post when your audience is most active. Finally, don’t ignore the reach metric itself—track which posts reached the most unique accounts and do more of that.
