Link people to your content. Link your content to success.

Tags on Instagram are clickable links that connect your content to people, locations, or brands. When you tag someone in a photo or video, you’re essentially creating a content link that notifies them and adds your post to a dedicated gallery on their profile. You can tag up to 20 accounts per post, and only the content creator can apply tags directly to the image—though anyone can @mention accounts in captions or comments. Tags serve as a powerful tool for content linking, expanding reach, and building community engagement.

Why tag people instead of just mentioning them?

@mentions and tags sound similar but they work differently. @mentions appear in the regular notification feed where they can get buried among hundreds of other notifications. Tags, on the other hand, trigger a separate notification and create a permanent gallery of content on the tagged account’s profile. This makes tags more likely to be seen and remembered. Additionally, when people visit a brand’s profile, they can scroll through an entire collection of tagged posts—essentially a user-generated content library that builds social proof and showcases real customer experiences.

How do you add tags to Instagram content?

Adding tags is straightforward. When uploading a new post, tap anywhere on the photo or select “Tag People” for videos, then type the username you want to tag. You can add up to 20 tags per post and move them around to position them exactly where you want on the image. You can also edit existing posts to add tags retroactively. The key rule: only tag people or brands that actually appear in your content. Tagging irrelevant accounts just to grab attention is flagged as spam and will hurt your reach.

What about location and product tags?

Beyond people tags, Instagram offers location tags and product tags. Location tags help users discover content from specific places and add geographic context to your posts. Product tags let you link directly to items you’re featuring, turning your content into a shoppable experience. These additional tag types enhance content linking by connecting your posts to relevant contexts and making it easier for followers to take action—whether that’s visiting a location or making a purchase.

Can you control who tags you?

Yes. If someone tags you in a post you don’t want to appear in, you can remove yourself. Go to the post, tap the three-dot menu, select Tag Options, and choose Remove Me From Post. Your tag disappears and the post no longer appears in your tagged content gallery. This gives you control over your brand image and ensures only content you approve of is associated with your account.
