Instagram’s new AI effects: where to find them and why they’re capped

Instagram's new AI effects: where to find them in Stories, how prompts work, and why there's a daily cap. What Mosseri said in his July 2026 Q&A.

Instagram rolled out a new set of AI-powered story effects, and Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s Head, walked through them during a July 2026 Q&A. You’ll find them behind a new Effects icon in the story creation screen: tap it, hit New, and the full set appears. They run on Spark, a new first-party Meta model, and they’re free to use, with one catch we’ll get to below.

How to find the new effects

  1. Open the story camera and pick or capture your photo or video.
  2. Look for the Effects icon in the story creation screen.
  3. Tap Effects, then tap New to browse everything that just shipped.
  4. Pick a preset, or skip the presets entirely and type your own prompt.

That last step is the real news. The presets are the starting point, not the ceiling. Mosseri stressed that “you can come up with anything you want, any prompt you want” and the model will generate a custom effect from it. If you’ve used Instagram’s earlier Restyle tool for Stories, this will feel familiar, but the prompt box is now the main event rather than a bonus.

Who gets the most out of this

For social media managers, three use cases stand out:

The catch: there’s a daily cap

The effects are free, but usage is limited per day. Mosseri was upfront about why: these models are expensive to run, so Instagram caps free usage and is building a subscription for people who want more. Coverage of the session at Social Media Today confirms the paid tier is in the works but has no launch date or pricing yet. In other words, plan for the cap. If effects become part of your daily story workflow, batch your generation sessions instead of burning the limit on idle experiments.

What this replaces

Practically, this folds a chunk of light design work into the app itself. The gap between “idea in the content plan” and “asset in the story” just got smaller, which matters most for lean teams. If you plan stories inside a shared content calendar, it’s worth adding a note field for effect prompts so the person publishing knows exactly what to generate, and your approved concept doesn’t mutate on the way out.

Keep an eye on the reel-reach side of your strategy too; we’ve covered how long reels keep earning recommendations and whether hashtags still matter in this same Q&A series.

FAQ

Where do I find the new AI effects on Instagram? In Stories. Open the story creation screen, tap the Effects icon, then tap New to see the latest AI-powered effects.

Can I create my own Instagram effect with a prompt? Yes. You’re not limited to presets. Type any prompt in the effects tool and the model generates a custom effect from it.

Why are the new Instagram effects limited per day? Because they’re expensive to run. Mosseri said Instagram caps free daily usage to manage server costs, and a subscription for heavier usage is in development.

Are the new effects available for feed posts and reels? Not confirmed. Mosseri demonstrated them in story creation. Watch Instagram’s official channels for any expansion announcement.
