Both videos appear side-by-side in a synchronized format, letting you perform, react, or respond in real-time to the content you’re duetting. The feature was designed to encourage collaboration and make it easy for creators to build on each other’s ideas without needing to download, edit, and re-upload separate videos.
The term comes from the musical tradition of a duet—two performers playing or singing together. On TikTok, the feature earned this name because it’s commonly used for creators to perform duets with one another, whether that’s singing together, dancing as a pair, or creating synchronized routines. While the original inspiration was musical collaboration, the feature has evolved far beyond that into a broader collaboration format for reactions, comedy, challenges, and commentary.
Both duet and stitch are TikTok collaboration tools, but they work differently. A duet plays two videos side-by-side simultaneously, while a stitch lets you clip a short segment from another creator’s video and incorporate it into your own. Duets are better for direct interaction and synchronized performance; stitches work better for responding to specific moments or building narrative sequences. Think of duet as performing together, and stitch as responding to what someone said.
Creators use duets for countless formats: dance challenges where you perform alongside the original dancer, lip-sync duets where you match vocals with another creator, reaction duets where you respond to someone’s content, comedy duets that build on a joke, and even educational duets where creators explain or expand on a topic side-by-side. The format works because both videos play at the same time, creating a natural back-and-forth dynamic.
To duet a video, find the original creator’s video you want to collaborate with and tap the Share button (arrow icon). Select the Duet option, and TikTok will open the camera with the original video playing on one side. Record your response, performance, or reaction on the other side. You can add effects, filters, and text just like a regular video. Once you post it, the duet appears on your profile and can be shared by others, making it easy for your collaboration to reach new audiences.
