How do you find more font colors on Instagram Stories?

The color row under the Stories text tool isn't the full set. Press and hold any swatch for the full spectrum, or use the eyedropper.

Press and hold any swatch. The row of colors under the Stories text tool is a shortcut, not the whole palette, and holding one of those circles opens a full gradient you can slide through to land on any Instagram story font color you want. There’s also an eyedropper next to the row that samples a color straight out of the photo or video behind your text. Someone put this question to Adam Mosseri during his August 2026 AMA, and it’s one of those features that hides in plain sight.

The hidden gradient

Open the camera, add text, and look at the color row along the bottom. Tapping gives you the preset. Pressing and holding is the part people miss: keep your finger down and a gradient view appears, then drag until you find the shade you want. Instagram spells out the same two moves in its own Stories tips and tricks post, which describes holding the color options to bring up a gradient view.

That gradient is where brand colors live. Not an exact hex field, but close enough that most brand palettes are reachable in about three seconds.

The eyedropper trick

The eyedropper icon sits at the left of the color row. Tap it and a small circle appears that you drag around the screen, sampling whatever is underneath: a jacket in the photo, a logo on a coffee cup, the sky behind a building. Let go and your text takes that exact color.

This is the better option when you want text that belongs to the image rather than sits on top of it. Pull the color out of the photo and the whole frame looks designed instead of captioned.

Getting closer to a brand hex

Neither tool gives you a hex code box, so exact matching takes one extra step. The reliable workaround: make a plain block of your brand color, save it to your camera roll, then add it to the story canvas and use the eyedropper on it before you delete or cover the block. Some teams keep a single image of their palette saved on the work phone purely for this.

The other route is the background fill. Add text, toggle the background color on, and the same press-and-hold gradient applies to the highlight behind your words, which is often more legible on busy footage than colored text alone.

Why any of this matters

Color is the cheapest brand signal in Stories. Fonts change, layouts change, but a consistent accent color across a week of stories is what makes someone recognize your account in the two seconds before they tap through. A palette people recognize does more for recall than a logo in the corner.

It’s also the detail that slips first when several people post to the same account. One person uses the pink from the deck, another uses whatever the eyedropper found in a photo, and by Friday the account looks like three different brands. Writing the hex codes into the same place the stories get planned is a boring fix that works, and keeping the plan and the assets in one shared view is what stops the palette drifting between whoever happens to be posting that day.

If your stories are already planned somewhere shared, the only change here is a line with three hex codes at the top of it. That’s the version worth setting up before the next campaign.

FAQ

How do you get more text colors on Instagram Stories? Press and hold any color in the row under the text tool. A gradient picker opens and you drag to pick any shade in the spectrum.

What is the eyedropper in Instagram Stories? It’s the color sampler at the left of the color row. Tap it, drag the circle over any part of your photo or video, and your text takes that exact color.

Can you use an exact hex code for Instagram story text? Not directly. Instagram doesn’t offer a hex field, so the workaround is to save an image of your brand color and sample it with the eyedropper.

Can you change the background color behind story text? Yes. Toggle the text background on, then press and hold a swatch to reach the same gradient picker for the highlight color.
