Close Friends

Your private VIP list. No rope, no bouncer, just you picking who sees what.

A close friends list is a feature that lets you create a segmented audience on social media to share Stories, Reels, and other content with only the people you choose. Rather than posting to your entire follower base, you curate a smaller group and share exclusive or more personal content with them—all without making your account private. It’s a straightforward way to practice audience segmentation and maintain different levels of sharing with different groups.

How is a close friends list different from keeping your account private?

A close friends list gives you selective control without the all-or-nothing approach of a private account. With a private account, you choose whether followers can see your content at all. With a close friends list, your public posts remain visible to everyone, but you can also share separate, more intimate content with just your closest connections. You’re not restricting your entire audience—you’re creating a special tier within it.

What content can you actually share with close friends?

On Instagram, you can share Stories, Reels, Notes, and regular feed posts to your close friends list. When you create any of these, you’ll see a \”Send to\” option at the bottom of the upload screen. Select \”Close Friends\” instead of \”Your Story\” or \”Everyone,\” and only people on your list will see it. The content appears with a green circle indicator, making it visually distinct from your public posts.

How do you add people to your close friends list?

Go to your profile, tap the menu icon (three lines), and select \”Close Friends.\” You’ll see a list of recommended people to add, or you can search for specific accounts. Tap the green \”Add\” button next to each person you want to include. You can add as many people as you want, and you can remove or add people at any time. No one receives a notification when you add or remove them, and they can’t see the full list—they only know they’re on it if they see the green indicator on your posts.

Why would brands use a close friends list?

Brands use close friends lists as part of their audience segmentation strategy to share exclusive previews, behind-the-scenes content, or special offers with loyal followers. Instead of blasting promotions to everyone, you can test new products, share vulnerable or authentic moments, or offer early access to VIPs. It builds a sense of exclusivity and community without requiring a separate private account.

Can people tell if they’re on your close friends list?

Not directly. They won’t receive a notification, and they can’t see who else is on your list. However, they’ll notice the green circle around your profile picture in Stories and the \”Close Friends\” label on posts you share with them. If they’re paying attention, they’ll know they’re in your inner circle—but they can’t spy on the full roster.
